Why Being a Driving Instructor is a Great Job

Many people love their job for many different reasons, from money to self-worth. It is the same for a driving instructor. I bet you can still name your driving instructor and recall some of the things that happened when you were learning!

As a driving instructor, the feeling you get when one of your pupils passes their driving test is amazing. Not only have you spent a lot of time with that person, helping to get them to a point where they can drive safely and pass their driving test; you’ll also get some self-satisfaction from knowing that you and your teaching skills helped to get that person on the road. It's a massive ego boost!

Is the money good? Most areas average £24-£25 per hour, so it can be good if you’re willing to put in the hours, because literally every hour you work puts more money in your pocket. So if you’ve got to pay off a holiday, or want some rainy day money, you can work more hours. If you don’t need to, you can have an easy day instead. The choice is yours! Just remember that you will need to be available when your pupils need you, so many driving instructors are used to working at least 1 day on a weekend.

Going through the training of becoming a driving instructor can be stressful, but it can also be rewarding. You’ve put a lot of time, effort and money into getting your qualifications so you deserve a pat on the back even if it’s from yourself.

You could even go on to help people become driving instructors! Just like a driving instructor helps pupils pass their driving test, there are instructor trainers who help potential driving instructors get through their tests.

The biggest draw to the role of being a driving instructor is that you can be in control of your own destiny, financially, training and time-wise. What you do every day can influence all of this.

So what’s good?
  • Drive a new car
  • Earn reasonable money
  • In control of my own destiny
  • Meet lots of new people
What’s not so good?
  • Spending time with people you don’t get on with
  • Potential financial issues if you cannot work
  • Unsocial working times (sometimes)
  • Traffic
The job/career of a driving instructor is what you make of it. You won’t be a millionaire but you can earn reasonable money. If you are a social person you’ll love the job.
